O January Father

In your nest of firelight,
Father ticks on the dark, wood shelf—
while mother bursts with fitful light,
dancing upon the mantle.
You dream with beady hunter’s eyes
in snowy forests deep,
in patchwork northern fields—
birds blushed by blazing sun
striking off snow.
You make
your comfort here—
fresh warm stew
of startled deer—
where spinning songs vibrate in air
from others’ hearts to yours.

Dark hallways open
to a deafness—
beyond which
fireworks— a gun—
flash blaze of winter night.
Tell me, O Father,
Oaken in your fields —
How deep your roots
in this winter’s nest
of whispered words,
of the icy fields
and snow?
